When we think about operating systems, for the first that come in our mind is Microsoft Windows and Mac-OS. They are expensive. But there is a popular open source operating system that runs parallel to Microsoft Windows and Mac OS.

Linux is an open source operating system based on the Linux kernel of the Unix family. Published by Linus Torvalds on September 17, 1991. All Linux packages are released under the name Linux Distribution. Now let’s look at some of the popular Linux distributions that have come out.

1. Ubuntu

It’s so popular that people are less likely to know it. This is an open source Linux distribution based on Debian that runs similar to Windows. Developed by Canonical Ltd and released on October 20, 2004.

Kali Linux is a Debian — derived Linux Distribution designed for digital forensic and penetration testing. Developed by offensive Security and released on March 13, 2013. It was released as Kali Linux after making several changes to Backtrack, which was based on Knoppix, the previous information security of offensive security.

There are above 600 pre-installed pen testing tools like Armitage (a graphical cyber-attack management tool), Nmap (a port scanner), Wireshark (a packet analyzer), John the Ripper (a password cracker), Aircrack-ng (a software suite for penetration-testing wireless LANs), Burp suite and OWASP ZAP web application security scanners.
